The PZ Habu BNF comes neatly and securely packaged. The interlocking foam cross members and packing tape keep everything in place during shipping so you shouldnt have any damage upon arrival. Upon opening the box the shear size of the plane becomes apparent as PZ has down a very good job of staying within the same physical size range, making the Habu a very impressive beginner EDF. (Note: The cross members have to be pulled STRAIGHT up to remove them after you have removed the tape)
Whats in the Box:
(1) Habu
(1) Eflite 15 3200Kv BL EDF motor (installed)
(1) E-flite Delta V 15 ducted fan unit (installed)
(1) 60 amp BL ESC (installed)
(1) AR500 DSM2 RX (installed)
(5) servos pre-installed (2 aileron, 1 elevator, 1 rudder, 1 nose wheel)
(1) EFlite 4s 3200 lipo (30c)
(1) car charger
(1) Bind plug
(+) Misc hardware (pushrod and control surface horn for the optional flaps)
Whats not in the Box:
Transmitter (must be DSM2)
Touch up paint (needed to touch up around the pushrod holes)
The Build:
Wing:
The first step is attaching the main wing to the fuse...be sure to connect the aileron servos wires together before securing the wing. The wing is a very tight fit and shouldn't have a gap on either side once installed correctly. Take your time, it took me a couple attempts to get her seated completely.
Elevator:
Connect the two servo wires to the correct plugs in the fuse... both sides are labeled. Now use two of the BLACK screws to secure the tail section to the fuse. The photo shows the silver screws but they are too short and I am not trusting my plane to the silver screws. The black ones worked fine. Now place the rudder on and then install the two support plates. Again I used the black screws to secure it all together. Add the rudder push rod (I mounted mine so it hung under the servo arm....just to lower it a little and maybe not make it soo obvious in photos)

Tail Cone:
Next you slide the tail cone over the tail and secure it with a couple of pieces of tape (Included).
Landing Gear:
I fly off of grass so I am making mine a belly flopper so no gear for this kid. However for those of you that want to install the LG it couldn't be easier. PZ mounted the steerable nose wheel to a plate that you secure to the underside of the nose after connecting the servo wire to the pre-installed servo extenstion. The main landing gears just snap into place. For those that want to belly flop PZ has included a plate that covers up where the nose wheel would have gone and in addition they provide 2 skid plates to attach to the belly to help protect it. Very nice touches as not only can you reduce drag with the gears removed you can save weight and have a spare servo!

Binding:
I prefer to bind the RX to the TX before I attach the pushrods to the control surface horns, in the case a naked servo is not centered it wont drive the control surface to the maximum deflection or strip itself out.
Once your done binding leave the TX on and just remove the Bind plug.

Cockpit:
I am happy to see that PZ has upgraded their pilot. Little improvemetns and details like this just add tot he over all impressiveness of the Habu.

PREFLIGHT:
Double check your control surfaces, with my DX7 my ailerons were reversed so I had to reverse the servo in the programming screen. For throws, I like a lot and set my ailerons to the max for high rates. Everyone is different so if you're new(er) go by the book here. I moved the ailerons in 2 holes and the elevator in 1 holes to gain more deflection.
Build Time:
Per instructions: 45 minutes
Report Card:
Good:
New Pilot
Fast build
Nice details... clean lines
Included charger charges through the balancing tap
EFlite 30c lipo included!!
Bad:
No touch up paint
FLIGHT REPORT:
http://www.horizonrcflyers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=426http://www.horizonrcflyers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=425
Weather Conditions:
Early morning
8-10 mph winds
36* F
Maiden:
Despite the cold I had to get her in the air. Crash27, Flybye (holding her in the pict above), DKoonze7, and Pete (NMMonto's dad) came out to watch and help. Crash27 ran the video camera and Flybye did the hand launching and still photos.
The Hl was uneventful, but you cant do it and hold the TX. The Habu is just too big and a little heavy to try and get a solid throw and have control of your transmitter. Flybe gave her a nice hard throw when I hit WOT with a 10* up angle and she was off and running. Impressive power for a stock set up. I have flown alot of EDF's over the last 3 years and this one has the best out of the box power I have ever seen or flown. A couple of clicks of up trim and one right click on the aileron and she was flying level at 1/2 stick. Amke no mistake about it, 1/2 stick on this screamer is faster then any other stock PZ warbird at WOT...hands down. Rolls are fast and with the setting I used (I eye balled them...bad idea, follow the instructions here) my controls were touchy. I never went to high rates as my low rates with 35% EXPO still proved to roll her fast then I would have liked for bankng turns.
WOT will put a smile on your face. Thanks to the weather I never could get her over 80-85mph...but even after flying her hard for 6 minutes the lipo came down COLD so once the weather warms up a little the lipo should come to life and my speed will increase.
I did one loop, but failed to level the wings completely and paid for it with a very nasty loop with the plane failing out to the side half way through and looking like a dying duck fighting to get away. My fault, not the the planes.
Landing are a little more difficult then I thought they would be. Most EDF's dont bleed airspeed very well so you get a long glide path which means a few laps around the field at 1/2 throttle while you slowly decrease the throttle as you make the laps. The Habu is no differrent except when you throttle her back from WOT to 1/2 you will notice a fairly quick reduction in speed and then all of the sudden she will hold that speed and the bleed off rate slows. I came in fast on both landings today and the second one I actually skipped her across the field and into my Radian!! No damage to either plane but I dont want to make a habit of landing in the pits either.
In the video I my first landing attempt I lost orientation and nearly lost her, in the video you see her going down and then grass as Crash27 was looking for the screaming foam burst to appear but once I regain orientation I was able to pull the nose up and punch the throttle out of trouble...IE the playground, Pavillion and tree's!!
I noted that this plane has more power then any other stock EDF I have flown so I need to explain that. On my second flight, Flybye got a little too excited and when he thew her he twistered his wrist and she went out side ways. I was at WOT and dropping the nose level and tapping the rudder I was able to get the tail behind her rather quickly. She might have lost a few feet in altitude but quickly got on step and climbed out. Not something my other EDF's would have recovered from.
Report Card:
HL: Moderate, but got to have a helper
ROG: NA, jets with LG hanging out the bottom bother me.
Glide: Steeper decent then other PZ warbirds...but eats ups space fast
Rolls: Fast, smooth
Loops: Big
Inverted: N/A at this time
Speed: 35-85mph...finally a stock EDF in the 80 plus mph range!!
Landing: Long fast approaches but with a head wind will be easier.
Beginner: No, a good step up after the Stryker C. Makes an excellent first EDF!!
Summary:
She looks great in the air and she flys just like a jet. Fast, agile, and smile inducing pleasure. I own all the new PZ warbirds from the T-28 forward and this is most enjoyable to fly, especially if you want speed and agility!!Orientation can be hard at distance as the grey doesnt help, especially if the sun in behind or to the side of the plane. I noticed a little tail wagging with the wind so until your comfortable with her dont fly her in winds over 10 mph. Its nothing major but if the tail twitching around behind her is something that will make you nervous just wait for a calmer day.
