Hi guys, and girls if appropriate. I just fouind this place and thought I'd join in for more information about this great hobby. I'm just getting started, making my 1st flight in Nov with an instructor. At 71 I'm kind of late getting started but I now have an Apprentice 15e which was my chosen Xmas present. I also have lots of the other necessary stuff so I'm really looking forward to warmer weather so I can start flying again. Until then I'm getting a lot of Sim time with the G4.5. Hope to chat with some of you folks.

Tom, welcome to HRF. The Apprentice is a very nice plane, I also have one. You will get a lot of good experience with your sim. Once again, welcome aboard.

Finally! I’m no longer the old man on this forum!! ::tonguee:

Welcome, Tom!!
Good choices - G4.5 and the Apprentice... That's exactly what I started with back in February of 2009. Great minds [with lots of experience] think alike.

You're going to love that Apprentice. It's a great trainer - forgiving and very easy to fly which also makes it a great platform for video cameras and a whole mess of modifications.

Welcome to the sport. I've had a blast being involved all my life (literally). Hit me up on G4.5 some time. I'm MR_T and usually try to host "Practice Makes Perfect" once or twice a week, Mondays or Tuesdays typically from around 6pm-10pm EST. I enjoy helping people in this hobby and am listed as a trainer here on the forum. And remember, there's no such thing as a dumb question.

Hi Tom welcome aboard! The simulator will keep you fresh and ready for spring. Practice all flight attitudes including inverted it will pay off big time come spring.

The Apprentice will treat you well for a long time to come, visit the Apprentice section and read up on a few areas you could touch up on before spring, such as larger wheels which will help greatly to prevent against prop strikes while you are learning. Preventing prop strikes will also save you motor mounts so the wheels are a great, easy instant pay back.

71 BAH! You are not any different than any of us other R/C Pilots, except you may be a bit more wise and not do the so what happens if I do this...and this....and Uh-huh THIS!

Are you a member of an airfield and an AMA member both great things.

I look forward to hearing how your Simulator time is going and your adverntures as you expand in this terrific hobby we share.

welcome, the great thing about this hobby is physical age means nothing, maturity is more important and around here we are all 15 yrs old!!!

Hi again folks,
Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It seems like there are a lot of Apprentice's out there, it was one of the first things I noticed at this group. I already knew about the wheel thing and just a couple of days ago installed three DuBro 3" wheels. Also checking other things that may be suspect, such as the posts that the rubber bands hook on to.
As for the simulator, I've had it for about three months now, and I usually fly it for at least an hour per day, sometimes more. I always get a lot of time on the NexStar, which is about as close to the Apprentice that I can find. I feel very comfortable with this plane, including landings. At other times when I want to play I fly the Extra 300 doing some things that I probably shouln't be doing at this stage. I also fly other planes, some of which I try inverted, usually ending up in a crash. LOL Although I'm not a licensed pilot I've had a little bit of experience flying full scale planes so I know what control inputs are needed for a lot of the maneuvers. At least it helps a little, but of course RC is a whole new ball game.
I did join the AMA and intend to join a club in the spring. The only reason I haven't done it yet is that our house is on the market. It's getting way too cold here in central NY for me so we want to move to NC. I've been in contact with a couple of club members in Lenoir so they kind of expect me whenever we make the move. Until then I'll be joining a club here in NY. These guys have really made me feel welcome and their instructor has been helping me along. I made a couple of flights with the Avistar back in Nov. while it was still kind of warm. Again, thanks for the warm welcome.
