It's my favorite time of year: Joe Nall (www.joenall.com)!
For those who have been, you know how great this event is. For those that haven't, it should be on your Bucket List. The main runway is like a putting green and with 5 flight lines, you can enjoy your favorite R/C activities from Floatplanes, Helicopters, Electrics, Boats, or hang out on the main flight line and browse through Vendor Row. The breadth of the main flight line and the numbers of aircraft and pilots is impressive in the least. Pat (Hartness) has truly given the R/C community the ultimate venue for our hobby. This year the event is "officially" a week long and there are new bath houses and food courts as well. Unfortunately this year I am only able to attend the last 2 days of the event. I'll try to upload some pictures and try to provide an update or two. If anyone heads out for the event, please provide posts and hopefully we can link-up. I will be spending the majority of my time out on the main flight line so hopefully I'll see you there! If you're in town Friday night (14th), the BBQ is also a "can't miss event".
Have fun!! I have a few friends in the "industry" that are bugging me to attend but it looks like I wont be able to make it. I am stll trying but just gotta see how things shack out.

I will be very interested to see how the 2.4-only mandate is received. There was some annoyance posted on the other newsgroups about this and there was some hinting that they might back off from the mandate, but I haven't seen anything recently.

I don't want to create a debate but for the mere safety alone I think it's the right decision. I have been to too many events, to include several Nalls, where beautiful A/C were lost due to poor Trx/Freq management. You can mitigate the risk through 2.4ghz and after standing on the flightline last year with all flight lines open while 73 T28s took to the skies, I for one became a fan on 2.4 only. The size and quantity of aircraft at Nall warrants such a mitigation even though it will unfortunately impact modelers who haven't converted. Again, I'm not trying to open a sore subject with anyone; safety first and foremost ( one reason why 3Ders are down the hill; which I consider myself and didn't mind that change either...). Just my opine

Spitfighter everything you have said is dead-on accurate.
I can see no reason other than not understanding the technology to warrant fear of 2.4GHz. FOr someone who has hundreds of hours of build time and thousands of dollars in a plane 2.4GHz is a great insurance policy. Obviously with 2.4 the correct equipment and setup is still essential, not like 2.4 cures a bad setup or incorrect equipment choice.
Hope you have a blast of a time.
Pics! Can't wait :happy bounce:

Tk,
I may have to retract my statement in 2 weeks (lol!) but I can't see Pat (Hartness) easing the mandate.
"there was some hinting that they might back off from the mandate, but I haven't seen anything recently."
SEFF is going to no TX (not even 2.4) being on in the pits next year. We had a few crashes and guys blamed their equipment but there are only soo many channels available even for 2.4 to work on. It will be interesting to see how JN handles running 2.4 only and how they control the pit area.

There were no "control measures" other than telling pilots to LV TRX off until at the pit and ready to start, and no 2.4 Trx impound last year. I'll provide an update if any measures are implemented. There is much confidence with 2.4 (too much?). MTF, Spit-fighter

Thanks for volunteering to cover this event for the Forum.
I went to Joe Nall about 10 years ago or so when there were only 2 flight lines (main and water) and it was just a 3 day event. Matt Chapman was flying the green and white color scheme of the Cap 232 at the time. I was most impressed by his full scale routine.
I agree, it's an event to put on your Bucket List right along with Top Gun, IRCHA, SEFF, Toledo, NEAT, and RD-RC's Toys for Tots. Did I leave any out?

I wasn't trying to stir the pot, just interested to see if the mandate sticks and how it's implemented.
I began my conversion to 2.4 when the first dedicated X9303 radios came out. All my experiences have been flawless (hope I didn't jinx myself with that statement).
I agree that it's pretty bulletproof, but it does take a different set of skills to setup than it did to get a useable 72MHz install.
I laugh at the guys who say they've been doing this for 20 years and they blame equipment on crashes. I've been modeling for over 43 years, but I've only been doing 2.4 for four, unless you count my wi-fi networking :happy bounce:
With flying sailplanes, we fly higher and farther away than most and a solid link to the aircraft is essential. I have found that with 2.4 GHz.
Several SIGS have mandated 2.4 GHz at their AMA NATS events this year, and of course IRCHA had 900+ pilots with less than 30 on 72 MHz, (of course the heli's don't fly very far away ::tonguee:) We have mandated 2.4 GHz for an event or two at the Soaring Nats this year just so we can run some specialized events concurrently. Since I'm registrar, I have an inside view and we're running an overall just shy of 50% 2.4 vs 72. That's a huge wswing from last year where our overall was around 25%.
Have fun, I make try and make it next year ... as you say it's a Bucket List event :clapping:

No worries. Almost all of the big fly-ins are going strictly to 2.4.
I wonder if Joe Nall is going to address the issue at SEFF of people flying in the parking lot and other places besides the flight lines.
Also, be ware, there were thieves at SEFF and are anticipated to show up at Joe Nall. Their pictures are said to be posted everywhere at Joe Nall.

Joe Nall posted "No Flying anywhere other than at a flight station". Last year, many folks (mostly youngsters) were flying small electrics all over the place. I, like you, will be interested to see how they handle this change. One week from today and I'm on my WAY! SF

TK - I know you weren't trying to stir the pot. Being new to this Group I didn't want to offend anyone or start a debate and my comment wasn’t directed at you (or anyone). I stopped participating in other Newsgroups since so many issues seem to become emotional and quickly turn into another episode of Peyton’s Place. This forum looks like a great place to have productive discussions and share information. Our soon-to-be new home is only about a 1-1/2 miles from the Creekside flying field, so I wanted to join the newsgroup and meet the local members; and I'm glad I did! SF

Thank-You for sharing your observation, I for one, appreciate it. We try hard to enjoy, share, grow within and offer an appreciation for our Hobby.
All that 'other stuff' can well stay at the 'other places'.

yep, this is a family friendly site to share the hobby, share your experiences, and enjoy commirodery (sp??)... we dont have a forum for politics and other "friendly heated discussions" for a reason, they create hard feelings.

Nice photos, I am sure you are seeing a terrific show!
Any wartime or battle reenactments, I have heard of some pretty elaborate shows at some of these bigger meets.

I've never heard of any battle reeanactments at Joe Nall. Main thing is Mac Hodges and his B-29 with the reenactment of the X1. There is usually a warbirds only flight (staged from WW1 to modern time). But the best part of Joe Nall in the past was Matt Chapman's full scale air show. Last year Matt Chapman and the owner of the full-size Beast flew together. That's what I like about Joe Nall, get a full scale show with R/C.
Spit, how's the noon demos been this year? I've seen video on YouTube of a midair on Monday at the 3D line. What's been the worst destroyed plane so far?
Spit,
If you run into Steve from Castle Creations tell him Bryan from SEFF said hi and hope him and the fmaily are enjoying themselves. Wish I could have made it. this event is on my Bucket list.

Well, Sad to say I'm back in Beaufort, SC getting honey-dos done for our relo to New Bern in 3 weeks. Joe Nall was great but my time there was too short. Pat Hartness continued to expand and build-upon an already great venue at Triple Tree. No matter your aviation R/C desires, you couldn't be disappointed. The weather was great for flying but it was a bit hot and humid. It was great seeing friends and catching up and enjoying the flight lines, vendor row, and just the aura of JN.
Due to slow data connections on my iPhone, I gave up trying to post any updates - it was too slow. Although having cell phone data coverage at Triple Tree is an advance to what is used to be. To answer some of the recent questions/posts... ATIS I missed your request - regrets!
2.4ghz was enforced. No flying ANYWHERE but one of the 5 flight lines, and pilots were asked to maintain TRX discipline until at a flight station and ready to fly. I heard of no issues regarding "shoot downs", although many an aircraft found the ground and into the pond down at the 3D flight line - flying hard and having fun down there (3D) was evident. There were a few "normal" mishaps on the main flight and a few mid-airs, but the flying overall was safe. I didn’t spend any time at the Heli and electric flight lines so I can't report on anything as it would be hearsay.
There is a warbirds hour after the noon demo's every day and Saturday morning was the WWI Dawn Patrol. Some pilots drop "payloads", parachutists, etc, but no warbird re-enactments this year (although there was one a few years back - can't remember the year?)...
I hope you all enjoy the pics. If there is a better way to do this, I'm sure the moderators (or members) will educate me!

To the float flyers and dedicated electric flyers my apologies for the lack of pictures. I have some electric pics but none are too good (blame the photographer!).
I hope you enjoy!

RCDUDE07:
I thought the overall noon demo's were ~weak this year. The Germans SU31 show was shorter and less mouth-dropping; 1/2 the show was sky writing which was boring knowing what the thrust vectored machines did last year. The helo demos were ~OK. QQ's Beast demo was great but it was too short. It was almost like they were cramming in more demos but overall I give it a "ho hum" grade. SF

That's a bummer.
Did you get to see the vector thrust jets 3D over the pond?

Didn't see them fly down on the 3D line but they flew a lot down there on Friday. From the main flight line it was cool seeing them flying down the hill at the 3D pond. Cool video! The noon time demo was NOT as good as the YouTube at the 3D line - bummer! Thanks for providing.
I think this is the video everyone has been looking for, man do I feel bad for him.

ATIS, I couldn't tell what happened.... Control surface flutter, CFIT, mid-air? It stopped pretty darn quick! The BVM Electra's are fast and sound cool too! A far cry from my original Byron MiG-15 with Webra DF .91, that's for sure. SF
no idea, I think he pulled up too hard at WOT and the wings snapped off
