View Full Version : My New student
Today was a great day at the field. CaptFred stopped by with his Apprentice and we started the flight training. He had some experience before he moved to town but hasnt maidened yet. I set up my DX6i to match his settings and then took her up and trimmed her out. Once another pilot (Earl H) trimmed out the buddy box, fred got on the controls.
We managed to get a couple of flights in before I had to go to church. He did great and I remembered just how much fun it is to teach rc flying. I am really looking forward to next sunday.

GREAT to HEAR you have a new student. Giving/assisting with the gift being able to fly is awesome. To this day everyone EVERY SINGLE TIME my wheels leave the tarmac, street, grass field or what-have-you I feel an overwhelming sense of freedom; my ties with Earth are released a little bit each time I takeoff. If I can share that feeling with someone else; you better believe I will!
ATIS I look forward as well to seeing Capt. Fred's learning, maybe he'll even make a journal of his learnings that would be cool.

Sunday we had decent weather to start with and Fred made it out to the field. We managed to get in 2 flights before the winds got bad (IE over 10 mph).
The first flight went well and I only took off and landed and Fred flew everything else without needing to me take over. We worked on turning without loosing altitude and smooth inputs.
The second flight I let him take off. The grass is a little long so it required a little up elevator to be held to keep the plane from flipping over on to its back. No biggie but with the 8-10mph head wind when he gunned the throttle she jumped off the deck and went nose high. I took control and got her level and turned it over to him once I made the first turn.
Fred asked if he could do some low level passes over the field and I cleared him to try them. We have trees to the left side and he would come in just over them and then dive once he cleared them for a good 15 feet and level out as he crossed the field. Not exactly the approach I would have used but it works and its obvious that Fred's next plane is going to be warbird.

Cool sounds like you had a good day..He likes the bomb and run style huh..:)
Cant wait to see what he chooses..::cheerful::
Heck ya, I thought he was only going to do it once so when he came around the second time and dropped the nose hard I was going to take over but figured I would give him a second or two to see how he responded to it. He just leveled her out and flew across the field. He is definately going to be looking for a warbird or sport flyer. I cant see CaptFred flying scale planes (Beavers or Cessna's), his yank and bank side is too strong!
CaptFred had a great day today with the Apprentice. Flew the entire flight in 10-15mph winds without my help. I just stood thier on the box holding the switch bored...next week should be his last buddy box flight and will be on his own unless he wants more box time. I love it when my students dont need my help any more. It opens them up to more flying since I work so much.

Congratulations to Capt. Fred for the good flying and advancement.
ATIS you are absolutely correct sharing this liberating hobby with others is hard to beat. Being able to 'fly' is awesome.

ATIS, Great to finally meet you and the gang at Creekside and to burn some volts together too. I look forward to more flying! SF
SF, I agree, it was great to hang out and now that the family is here I look forward to meeting your boys and having them fly with us as well. Next weekend you can fly the PT-17 if you like (its in the articles section for details). I flew the PT-19 after everyone left as Jay (checksix) was itching to see her in the air.
