I am going to do a mini reveiw on this plane in the coming days, first I have to get the motor/esc/servos/misc bits.
so far she looks nice out of the box and I will not need to take the heat iron to her as the covering and built-up parts look perfect.
pics coming soon.

Sounds great, feel free to do a full review if you like :)
Scott,
let me know and I will come out to shoot the stills and the video. Do you want to do an actual review like the ones I have done?

bryan, I dont know how long it might take to get her together as I have to work some nights, days, weekends, at all different hours. I am putting all new equipment (kitchen) in all six BK over the next month, so I may end up doing just a simple mini reveiw.

on the table.
Scott,
Just take some photos of the build, anything that didnt fit correct or the instructions were confusing/unclear. Then take the completed picts. After that I can get the in air and video for you. Typing up the review can be done over a vew days... trust me... I understand the busy schedule.

Definitely not a USA event. The FAA would have a fit.

I got this Sukhoi on eBay and it has a cracked rib (see photos). I don't have it yet, but it really doesn't look all that bad.
I'm thinking; dampen it, bend it back into place then apply some wood glue
Once dry, the wrinkles in the ultra-kote will smooth out with my iron.
Whatta think? Any hints?

Got that and this T-28d together with combined shipping.

That should hold me for the rest of the winter... Yeah, right
dampen it and get it straight....then use THIN CA...it will soak into the wood and create a stronger bond. Just go easy on the thin CA and use an applicator tip. After the first lite coat dries, apply a second lite coat and allow to dry. Then use a hair dryer to go over the monocote and tighten it up.

Got a scare today – This is the first time I can remember getting a damaged package from UPS. However, everything inside was still good. Of course, except for the dented fuselage that I already knew about.

Just like we predicted, the rib repair took about 10-minutes.
Dipped a sponge into boiling water and applied it to the cracked wood for about 20-seconds, checked and repeated.
Then I just pressed it back into place with my finger and cut a brace to hold it in place while it dries (no hurry).
I'll give it 2-3 days then paint it with a coat of Elmers wood glue, run the sealing iron over the outside and start the build.
Not a bad deal ::very happy::

Warning in the Sukhoi’s manual:
"This model excels at flying slow and easy as well as fast and extreme. Trim the model for level flight at half throttle. Only use full throttle for maneuvering. It is not recommended to fly this model fast or at full throttle in level flight. Doing this can result in the flight controls fluttering and a potential catastrophic failure of the airframe."
Since it can be a "little difficult" for me to find Half-Throttle on my TX, I thought it best to reinforce the tail feathers. I used some 1-mm carbon fiber rod Part #MID5702 for 'flying wires'.
I drilled very small pilot holes in the horizontal stab where three pieces of wood come together. Then did the same in the vertical stabilizer where the wood was solid (none of the holes go all the way through).
I cut each of the four pieces of CF rod a hair big, bowed them to ‘snap’ into place then applied a drop of CA to each hole.
The CF rod weighs .029 grams per inch and I used about 10-inches, so it added about .29-grams to the tail. But, man that stuff really ties everything together. If I twist the horizontal stab, the vertical stab moves with it. If I twist a little more, I can actually see the fuselage start to twist.

By a show of hands, how many here know what it sounds like when you let the Smoke Genie out of a Park-480?
:duh:  :yikes: :pullhair: :eye pop: ::fiery::
I managed to get her down, but not in the parking lot. Instead, I had to ditch in the grass, but my view was obscured by a mound of snow. She landed hard and folded the main gear under.
The wooden plank with the blind nuts in it tore loose. A relatively easy repair since it didn’t break, but just tore tabs A and B from slots C and D.
I have enough epoxy on there now that’s stronger than it was before. But that brand new motor ticks me off. It had just 4 1/2 batteries through it.

WOW I am impressed to see that, obviously a defect. What battery were you running, nothing nuts right like a small 4S?
Embarassing it is but I smoked a motor once trying to push the envelope. ATIS and E-Flite told me not to do it but I wanted to try. I smoked a 480 with a 4S, well it never smoked it just got REAL REAL hot and starting clunking and dragging. When I brought her in the loc-tite on the prop adptr had melted. I of couse touched her and WOW was that motor hot, no smoke but plenty of BAD BAD smell and the can was watped.
So I know what it is like to smoke a motor but mine was purely negligence related. Otherwise I have never had an E-Flite motor go down. Heck I still have my Apprentice motor, have now swapped her for a Power 15 and 4S but she was still running. She was getting loud now and was losing power I feel but I can't even guess how many hundreds of flight she had on her and I love WOT so she was worked.
I replaced a Park450 in my son's Super Cub as it was starting to get noisy but it still ran fine it just had a bearing getting a bit scratchy.
Contact HH send them the motor and a copy of your receipt and they'll take care of you. Of course I can't speak for them but given their CS track record if there is something wrong they will replace it and make it good with their customers.

Darn, getting the magical white fairy back inside is impossible...she is very uncooperative once she gets loose.
What happened? What prop and lipo where you running?

Sickening sound followed closely by a sickening feeling. Sort of like the sound of the brake and LVC all at once. I knew right away something smoked. Then once I realized I had control surfaces, I knew it was the motor. In the photo you can see some of those windings burned which made it run like it had major flat spots.

I didn’t meter the 13x6.5, but the 12 x 6 prop was pulling 29-30 amps.
You over propped her... I never go over a 11x5.5E prop on the 480. If a 12x6 pulled 30 amps the 13x6.5 was probably pulling close to 36amps!! 12x6 is the biggest recommended prop for the motor.

Oh Tim yeah you pushed her hard.
From E-Flite's site, the Park480,910 Kv has a maximum continous current draw of 20A with Max burst to 25A(15sec)
From E-Flite's site the Park 480,1020Kv has a maximum continous current draw of 22A with a maximum burst to 28A(15sec).
One thing that definitely needs to be kept in mind is that no matter how large the prop the motor will DIE before it will stop trying to turn at the KV rating. The motor will do everything it can to spin at the KV, if voltage is present it will spin the prop at the motor's KV and if it is too big a strain poof goes the motor.
Now if you return with I never pushed it beyond 1/2 throttle well then I don't see how this prop could've cooked it. However we all like to get on the juice, I am terrible about this so whenever I prop a machine I have to prop it so I can fly hot a lot and not kill the motor. I always stay below the max's otherwise I know with my throttle management skills I'll be shooting smoke trails everywhere.
Sorry for the bad luck, watch those Amps.
Wayne
edit: I have heard the Park motors although great motors can not take being over-drawn for very long. On the other hand I have also heard the opposite with the larger 15size and up motors you can OVER-DRAW them like crazy yet they keep going. I am not recommending you try it nor going to try it and find out but that's just something I have heard spoken in the pilot's circles at the airfield.

Yeah, I kinda figured as much.
It's a fun plane to fly and you can really tell the difference with the 13x6.5.
I got away with it for a battery or two by throttling back and cruising for awhile. Then I guess I got a little carried away ::tonguee:

Lovin the SU 26m 480. Maidened today and it's my new trunk plane. Light, solid, well balanced, well powered. Great little plane!
