I am authoring a bit too many of these crash and burn posts latley:thumbs down:
Nothing horrible as my last entry but when flying the T-28D at the field tonight I had an incident.
A newer gentlman showed up at the field and my son and I were flying. He went to get his Super Cub going as we were still flying, son can run for 30+ minutes with his Super Cub so no issue there but my 4S 2150 doesn't last much more than 10 minutes when running the Power15. Anyhow I hit the LVC, called out an immediate landing dead stick, right as the same time the other gentleman was walking out behind me and began saying On The Field. So I called out again dead stick landing no power, the other pilot acknowledged and said all clear off the field you are clear to land.
On my deadstick approach I had to bleed some energy smartly, line up final then land. All was going great, was in a very awkward position in the air in conjunction to the runway when this happened, so I was happy. I flew her in and right as I approached touchdown of the mains right there in the middle of the runway was the other pilot's Super Cub. I saw it with no more than 4 feet to spare and I was in a great main gear touchdown attitude, no power what's one to do.
Well I tried to clear it with some elevator and no luck, CRUNCH I creamed the super cub. I said some not so nice words at myself. I had assumed "all clear you are clear to land" meant ALL WAS CLEAR and not just his body was clear. I should've made a quick scan but I was quite busy with this unusual unanticipated LVC that caught me in an anyhting but ready to land position.
The Super Cub suffered a couple golf ball size chunks of foam out of the wing's LE and a broken elevator clevis.
The T-28D had the prop adptr somehow jolted in a way to loosen the set screw, nose gear again somehow turned in it's socket and screw was loose, rear of wing was torn from fuselage and a few small dents in the wing's leading edge.
It could have been a lot worse but I was not very happy at our mis-communication nor happy am I at myself for not making a quick visual check of the runway.
I will likely need to glue the wing mount in the front as it was torqued pretty good and I may go ahead and actaully glue the wing in, maybe. Remember this is the Power15 enhanced T-28D so a glued in wing would not be overkill, would make it more difficult to replace a wing but it is getting loose again.
My son and I flew 11 packs tonight and this was our only issue and he had a great time so all is good. A side note Ethan, my son, landed the Apprentice tonight for the first time. I had him buddy-boxed to the Apprentice and he's learning how to be a bit more easy on the controls. He landed once and flew for about 25 minutes with no issues. He flew his Super Cub tonight for at least 90 minutes air time.
