Date: Oct. 1 2009 (1 year anniversary of being laid off from Sony Ericsson)
Time: 7:00am EDT
Winds: less than 3 mph
Aircraft: ParkZone Sukhoi
Duration: 5-6 minutes
Type of flying: Maiden flight

Nothing crazy. Flying on low rates getting the feel of the plane. I like other pilots feel the plane is a bit under powered. Had a blast just flying level, trimming, and getting the feel of the plane. Tried stalling it and it just mushed over on the left wing tip. Cut the power too much and the plane noses down.

Date: Oct. 1 2009 (1 year anniversary of being laid off from Sony Ericsson)
Time: 7:06am EDT
Winds: less than 3 mph
Temp: 47-50 degrees Fahrenheit
Aircraft: ParkZone Sukhoi
Duration: 3-4 minutes
Type of flying: light aerobatics

Wanted to see what the plane could do aerobatically on low rate. Snap rolls were large and ugly, inverted flight was fine. Noticed during level inverted flight the plane wanted to climb. Since I didn't let the motor cool between switching the batteries, I didn't want to burn the motor and cut the flight short. Also, being on the East Coast, I had to go to work. :thumbs down:

But any day that starts with 2 flights is going to be a good day.

Flight #3:

Date: October 2, 2009
Winds: Calm (official statement from WRAL)
Time: 7:00am
Duration: 5-6 minutes
Type of flying: Basic Aerobatics

Remembered to use the throttle trim, definitely could cruise at less than full throttle with the trim up. Turned dual rates on elevator and ailerons and the plane was a lot better handling. Tried knife edge, doesn't feel like enough power to keep the plane in straight and level knife edge flight. Fun times!

Flight #4

Date: October 2, 2009
Winds: Calm (official statement from WRAL)
Time: 7:06am
Duration: 5-6 minutes
Type of flying: Basic Aerobatics

Completed full flight with dual rates. Enjoyed!

Date: October 3, 2009
Time: 12:35pm
Winds: 5-10mph and stronger gusts
Aircraft: ParkZone Micro Sukhoi SU-26M
Duration: 5-6 minutes

Waited until after the soccer and T-Ball games were finished and went to the local park. Standard flying with basic aerobatics. The kids were fascinated. Winds were calm to light during this flight. Gave the kids a basic overview of how an R/C airplane/TX combination works. This is what the sport is all about!

Date: October 3, 2009
Time: 12:45pm
Winds: 5-10mph and stronger gusts
Aircraft: E-Flite Blade CP
Duration: 5-6 minutes

Switched over to the Blade CP to let the motor cool some on my Sukhoi. Basic heli flying: hover, nose-in hover, forward flight with figure eights, some basic sideways flying, some basic backwards straight line flight. The kids loved the heli even more. Winds were light during this flight. If you think you can fly well, it helps to have people watching and have to fly around to avoid.

Date: October 3, 2009
Time: 12:51 pm
Winds: 5-10mph and stronger gusts
Aircraft: ParkZone Micro Sukhoi SU-26M
Duration: 4-5 minutes

Switched back to my Sukhoi. Kids were still fascinated. Winds were picking up and it was being blown around. Ended the flight early to be safe due to the winds. Talked to one of the mothers who thought it would be a good hobby for her son to get into to help improve motor skills. Highly recommended an R/C flight sim to help save some money.

Date: Sunday October 4, 2009
Time: 10:45am
Winds: 0-5 mph with stronger gusts
Weather: Clear blue skies
Aircraft: ParkZone Sukhoi SU-26M
Duration: 6:30 minutes
Flying Type: Standard aerobatics

Date: Sunday October 4, 2009
Time: 10:55am
Winds: 0-5 mph with stronger gusts
Weather: Clear blue skies
Aircraft: E-Flite Blade CP
Duration: approx. 5 minutes
Flying Type: Basic heli flying with faster forward flight, faster turns, figure 8s.

Date: Sunday October 4, 2009
Time: 11:05am
Winds: 0-5 mph with stronger gusts
Weather: Clear blue skies
Aircraft: ParkZone Sukhoi SU-26M
Duration: approx 6 minutes
Flying Type: Standard aerobatics, winds were picking up so I tried to point it into the wind and have it stand still or fly slowly forward.

Date: Sunday October 4, 2009
Time: 11:15am
Winds: 0-5 mph with stronger gusts
Weather: Clear blue skies
Aircraft: E-Flite Blade CP
Duration: approx. 3 minutes
Flying Type: Winds were starting to pickup. Was being blown around, a father and dad was watching across the soccer field. Was try to get the heli back to a low hover when a gust of wind got a hold and caused a less than graceful landing. One main blade did the infamous twist and ended up inverted. Removed the linkage, twisted the blade back around. Didn't want to risk the heli again. Called it a day with my Blade.

Date: Sunday October 4, 2009
Time: 11:20am
Winds: 0-5 mph with stronger gusts
Weather: Clear blue skies
Aircraft: ParkZone Sukhoi SU-26M
Duration: approx 4 minutes
Flying Type: Standard aerobatics, winds were more than the first flight. Tried to focus on slow flight and pointing the plane into the wind to cause it to stand still or slowly fly forward. Wind was really gusting, so called it a day.

After all the flying I asked the father and son if the son wanted to come see everything closer. The son was about a year or two old. Explained the plane and helicopter setup with the father and showed them how the controls worked on the plane. Talked to the father about his experience (a cheapo from Radio Shack, kids and friends couldn't wait for him to get home and tried to fly it, got stuck on the roof of the house, and it was left there until the next windstorm and never saw again. Once again, I told him about the flight simulators on the market and how it helped me and how it would be beneficial for him if he was still interested in the hobby.

Since I'm flying at the local community park I make a point to invite spectators over at the end of my flying to let them see everything up close and ask questions. The kids love it and think it's the coolest thing. I find parents are really appreciative of the openness and friendless of this gesture and interaction with the kids. And what better way to grow interest in the hobby!

Happy Flying!

Gave a demo to some coworkers.
During the demo a hawk came out and made a low swoop at the plane. That got a laugh from the gang watching, made me nervous for the rest of the flight. I did not want to see my plane fly away under a bird's grasp.

After careful post flight inspection noticed the tip of the prop got nicked and a small corner of the left aileron got torn off. Didn't appear to affect the flight of the plane. Everyone was impressed by my skill and the size of the plane and battery.

Sadly, now it's time to get back to work.

Ended the work day with 2 flights!

Best conversation piece was with a little boy about 6 years old that showed up while in my first flight to kick a soccer ball around with friends.

Boy: Hey mister, that's kind of neat.
Me: Thank you. Yes it is. It's remote controlled.
Boy: Is it for grownups only?
Me: Well, yes. It's really expensive, $200.
Boy: That's a rip.
Me: No, this stuff is really expensive.
Boy: It's still a rip.

I sent my Dx6i off Saturday for the trainer jack repair bulletin, so I couldn't fly my ultra micro Sukhoi. :thumbs down:

Something's not right and I need to track it down. Motor just dies about a minute or two into flight, especially when pulling vertical or inverted. 2 out of 3 batteries are showing this problem. Replaced the batteries in the charger last night and did a full charge on all 3. I'm thinking it's the amount of up elevator trim or maybe rudder not right as the last thing I tried to do before sending the TX in for repair was give more rudder throw.

Here in NC, it's starting to get chilly in the mornings. My hands were a bit cold after those two flights. But man, a beautiful morning for flying. You need one of those hand protectors (looks like a modified pizza delivery bag) that goes around the TX and hands while you fly. I saw a picture of Justin Chi using one somewhere on the internet.

My dad is the reason why I'm in this hobby. He started well before I came along (so mid 1970's). All nitro. He's way more of a builder than flier. He's gotten so nervous on flying models for the first time, that he lets others fly them first. I think it's because of having some bad experiences. I think he also got tired of me telling him all the time about my routine flights on the PZ UM Sukhoi that he wanted something to fly in his 1/2 acre yard after work. My 2 minute walk to the park behind my apartment versus his 30-40 minute drive to the club. I helped him set up the CG at 30mm, just needed a long T-Pin taped to the back to balance it.

Had the plane in the truck after flying this morning before work. There's a nice clearing of field near the water runoff pond and the weather was too good to pass up (this past Sunday and Sunday week before were perfect but couldn't fly due to wedding planning). The charger mod (http://www.horizonrcflyers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=909)works wonders! :happy bounce: Just don't do what I did. (See thread)

Around the 2-3 minute mark I got a nice prop hang that resulted in 1/2 a torque roll. Not enough rudder authority to keep it pointing vertical.

Weather forecasts for the remainder of the week calls for winds beyond the PZ UM Sukhoi's abilities, clouds, and rain.

Haven't been flying the Blade CP due to excessive vibration. Put new blades on and it shakes. Need to take them off and balance them.

3 flights (5, 6.5, and 5 mins) on mine and 1 on Dad's.

Dad got 1 flight on his. It was making an awful noise with the prop spinning and we noted his didn't have the speed mine has. After a field inspection we noticed the motor mount was loose. Dropped some 5 minute Epoxy on the mount when we got back to the house. Also noticed his prop shaft was slightly bent. The wobble and noise was significantly less, but not as quite as mine.

My new favorite "maneuver" is the inverted launch. Dad wasn't too sure about his FlghtMax 138Mah batteries that came with his previously used Sukhoi. So I tested one out on mine. Got about the same amount of flight time, but I was doing a lot of prop hanging and even got it to hover once or twice early in the flight.

'Twas great being able to fly after the turkey lunch. I should have had him charge up his Stryker and fly it as well.

Was too breezy for the plane to get any good prop hangs. Attempted knife edge flight, but didn't have enough rudder authority. I need to move the clevis on the control horn to create more rudder throw.

I came down with a cold on Friday. Decided to work from home today because the cold fooled me yesterday and I had to leave work and work from home in the afternoon.

Given the upcoming weather forecast here, current conditions, the park outside my back door, I couldn't resist the calling of the skies. ::tonguee:

I moved the pushrod one hole in on the rudder control horn. Big Difference! Still not enough authority for sustained knife edge flight, but enough to make a difference in loops, prop hangs/mini hovers. Yes, I said mini-hovers. With the rudder authority now I can hold the prop hangs longer, not long enough to be hover though. I noticed a mother and her little boy had stopped to watch me. So I ended the flight early and approached them to talk about what they saw. The boy was learning to ride a bike so he was between 4 and 5 years old. I left the battery in the plane and holding it away from them gave them a crash course on how I control the plane in the air by moving the sticks and them seeing the appropriate control surfaces on the plane move. They were most impressed by my prop hangs and said "You looked like you know what you were doing!" After explaining this plane was not for beginners and what I had to do to learn to fly, they decided to go on their way.

I actually did 2 flights (4 mins and 2 mins). Either due to the coldness outside or dying batteries in the charger, the batteries didn't last very long. The 4 minute flight consisted of hand tossing about 3 or 4 times due to LVC and motor cutting off. The 2 minute flight I gave up and decided it'd be worth changing the batteries in the charger.

Call it cabin fever, but I just wanted to fly. I also like pointing an aircraft into the wind and keep just enough power on to fly it like a kite. Unfortunately one gust of wind on the ground cartwheeled the plane and now I must do repairs. Vertical Stab broke at the fuse and the rudder hinges broke.... See attached.

Being that sun was setting, the last 2 flights were getting difficult to see. I gotta say I'm really impressed by the red glow of the AR6400. I don't know why but I really like watching the red glow of the Sukhoi's nose in the dawn and dusk setting.

I also ended up performing a "new" maneuver (or at least new to me). If anyone knows the official name, let me know. The maneuver was performed by starting from level flight and inputting opposite aileron and rudder with full up. I don't think it's a snap roll (I've been performing snap rolls with same direction of aileron and rudder with full up). This maneuver looked like a cross of aileron roll and snap roll. It looked cool to me so I did the maneuver a few more times.

I also decided to see how small of a space I could fly her in. So I kept her in a super tight circle and kept her within the regular sized T-Ball field at the park. No other flying besides tight circles, both to the left and to the right.

You are on the brink of a spin there. You are still in snap roll but if you get lazy with the aileron you will be in a spin. Try this spin technique; DO this only at altitude:

Begin level flight slow her to a stall,
Go Full up elevator
Go Full Right or Left Rudder
Once the stalling plane reacts give her some gas more gas the faster she spins to the ground.
To exit full rudder oposite direction.
If you start from inverted position and use down elevator.
You can lose orientation when doing this especially if she is really spinning so leave room to reorient/recover if need be. This maneuver can get you in trouble so only perform it at your own risk, is a site to see and the prop wash sounds interesting. In addition these maneuvers are hard on the plane so keep that in mind.

Thanks. Gives me a good place to start learning the notorious flat spin. I've been wanting to learn for years now.

Brought the plane in to work today for some breaks during the day. A co-worker has been wanting to see it fly but every other time I brought it he was busy. Took him out and showed him the plane's taxiing ability for a minute then hand launched and flew over the frozen end of the pond. I was trying to land and take off from the thickest frozen section. Battery went caput early in the flight. Tried again, caput again. Then it dawned on me I hadn't let the lipos warm up from being in the truck during the drive to work.

Time to start working.

Wind was picking up during flight #3 to be closer to 5-8mph. Due to the limited space, I flew flight 3 at 1/2 or lower throttle and gingerly added throttle but never going WOT. I also kept my flying to just level flight and was able to achieve another 9 minute flight with the 150mAh battery.

Practiced real landings (powered with ROG). Nicked the tips of my prop, not happy with the lack of ground clearance. I'm too used to planes floating on approach and not having to fly them the to the ground. But it'll be good practice. I'll stick to preferring flying over grass though.

Many people from the various business where my office is located were out walking during lunch today. Met one guy who moved here from Florida that flies r/c and commented he'd thought about flying where I was and heard someone did and was happy to see it happen finally. This conversation was a great PR stunt for the Ultra Micro Sukhoi because he wasn't aware of the plane and commented on how well it tracked and flew. Several other people would stop and watch for awhile and make comments on how nice it looked. Overall it was a great lunch break being the middle of January.

As soon as I got home, I pulled the TX, plane and batteries out and left everything else in the truck and headed to the park. During flight #1 3 kids ages 3-5 were out walking with their mothers and were way ahead of them and started watching. So as I was flying I was talking to them and standing so they could watch. When the mothers caught up they said "Can we watch him fly, he's really nice." So they continued to watching and with about 2 minutes left of juice I brought the plane in and showed them how moving the sticks on the TX causes the plane to do stuff. While I was flying inverted one kid asked "Why are you flying upside down?" My response "Because it's fun." I finished off that battery and the moms were ready to leave, but I heard all three kids saying "I want one Mommy" and the moms respond "We'll have to see about that for Daddy for Father's Day."

During flight #4 I was able to get her to do a mini hover and 2 torque rolls (to the left) with the fresh charge. The keys to these are 1. a fresh 150mAh battery, 2. do it early in the flight (under the 3 minute mark), 3. get her straight 90* with the ground early.

All in all a fantastic day of flying with work in between. Don't get 65* plus days in January that often.

Wow, it's been just over a month since my last flight and boy did it show. There was a boy about 8 to 10 years old out there with his R/C motorcyle. He liked the Sukhoi so much he asked if he could take video of me flying. Of course I said yes and he could ask me any other questions about the plane. The third flight was starting to get windy and the park was getting more crowded, kids about 3 or 4 years old were starting to run out and chase after the plane, even with my polite warning they continued to run after it. So I called it a day at that point. But man it felt good to get back in the air!

My wonderful wife accompanied me to see the maiden of her gift. The Mustang flew wonderful on low rates and stock settings. No Expo. It's much quicker than the Sukhoi and handles superbly. Had to cut the 3rd flight of the day (second on the Mustang) short because people were showing up for little league soccer.

During the end of the P-51 flight a mother and son stopped by to watch. The boy was about 3 years old and was fascinated with the Mustang flying. I talked to them some, showed the boy how flying the airplane works (stick movement with control surface movement and what the plane does). He was super fascinated by the helicopter, so I flew it for them. The mother asked questions about local clubs and events, so I pointed her to two clubs in the area and gave her dates for some fly-ins (see the forum's calendar). I also told her about the flight simulators and the cost savings of using them first. I was getting ready to put the Mustang back up in the air on a new battery, but got called in for lunch.

Ended up spending an hour at the park. 3 different people stopped by asking for more information on R/C planes (where to buy, etc...) and one about R/C helis. One guy had his off road R/C truck with the new Spektrum DX3 surface radio and found out he's learning to fly on the Apprentice and DX7i. I made sure he was connected with the Flying Tigers of NC at Jordan like due to the size and training help there and he was. One father was curious about how R/C helis work, stability, cost, how it compares to airplanes, etc... After a demonstration and showing him how to control the heli, I recommended he get Phoenix flight sim with DX5e and the CX or mCX for his first heli. Another guy wanted to know where to buy stuff like I had and I referred him to the LHS in the area.

Only down side was breaking the prop shaft the Sukhoi, but that's okay because the Mustang is my favorite and it flies so much better. More batteries for warbird!!!!

Sorry to hear of the Sukhoi Prop shaft ooops, it happens.

I am happy to see you are having so much company and doing a good job promoting the hobby. Do you have a trainer cable? Have you offered to buddy up some people?

I currently don't have a buddy cord, but have that on my long term list once I get plugged in with a club. I also would like to be able to keep a trainer plane around to give people that first flight to get the taste.

So I tried to trim some off the back. Each flight after this (2) had an ocassional squeak/metalic bark sometimes and the flights only were about a minute. I think something got into the motor and caused the problem. After smelling the motor area, it smelt hot and foamy.

Met up with JBray (http://www.horizonrcflyers.com/forums/member.php?416-Jbray) this afternoon for some flying. By the time I got there his PZ UM Cub had sheared the prop shaft while flying. Brand new, no crashes. He showed me the two PZ T-28s he just bought used (one in each color scheme). After some TLC they'll be airborne again. I flew the UM PZ Sukhoi (original) b/c he had bought one for his first plane and through the LHS website's forum I convinced him to hold off on flying it and get something else, so he did and now he's thankful. He was impressed with how the UM Sukhoi flew. Due to the winds, I was able to get about consecutive 3 torque rolls on the fresh 150mAh battery. But noticed I was losing power and would get noise at WOT. After a pass I noticed vibration. Initial indication points towards the motor mount being loose. Just a simple glue/epoxy fix. We're hoping once he gets the T-28ss repaired to meet up again, help him with transitioning from a 3ch to a 4ch aircraft, and do some dog fighting with two T-28s. He has a Super Cub that sounds like he's mastered and is itching for flying the 4ch. Good day worth of flying all in all.

Great little bird. My favorite thing it to fly circuits through our pass through window and door way between the living room and kitchen. I even flew it up the stairs and back down. Backwards flight is a little slow, looks more like a tail in flat circle (not really a funnel). Really enjoying the bird, only regret is waiting this long to get one.

Sorry to hear about your "accident." The weather and our schedules really need to work together for us soon. The field there looks awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing it in person.

It was just a case of turning into the wind, which caused loss of lift. The landing gear on this plane is prone to flatten out. The plane itself was designed to have a single nose wheel and tail wheel. Dad and I didn't feel like doing a balancing act all the time, so we made our own landing gear. Yeah, our schedules haven't work well yet, be we'll get together at some point. My former manager is typically out there on Sundays, wish I could have been out there today, but family time was needed.
