So, I have been ome all week with what I beleived to be the swine flu.
Today I was feeling much better and I was getting bored. This is seldom a good thing for me.
I had some 3mm cellofoam laying about and wanted to build a freeflight glider to drop dfrom my SD. I have built a few "lifting body" style planes that had mixed results (mostly poor).
Today I think I have built a winner. Taking ideas from the x-24, m2-f2-and the fabled aurora project. I built a glider that has a flat top v shaped bottom surface no vertical stabaliser and it is STABLE. The glide slope is suprisingly shallow. Sorry for the poor pics but it is very hard to find a good angle to show it.
If the test flights from altitude work out well I may scale it up and add power.

she should float but two things need to be done before you drop her...

1) round the LE's using 150 grit sand paper
2) Chuck test her to find the CG and set it using washers or pennies

Rounding the LE will help reduce drag so she will float better and getting the CG set will help her fly.

Looks like the shape of one of those Star Wars Imperial destroyer-ship thingys:

Just remembered that I had seen a video of an RC scratch-build of one of those, about a year ago. Here you go...something to shoot for:

There's a link to a build thread there too.

A guy at SEFF had one...thing was a great floater and was impressive flying around the field chasing the WWII fighter in park flyers.

Yeah gentleman at my Airfield this year, actually the one who took the photos/video at our fall Fly-IN had a small foam wing. Boy oh boy could tha thing haul ***. Had a little brushless pusher motor, sounded like a bumble bee on speed, flew like on too.

I was just getting into being able to keep up with it with my eyeball when it chucked the prop and he had no replacement. Then he broke out a home-made mini-4site like plane, this guy was good, danced over the soybeans dragging the rudder atop the plants a few times.

I will Pinchflat look forward to hearing how she goes for ya, kind of a glorified paper airplane launched at altitude.

The test glides went well. If the weather holds out I will test on Sunday.

you could use the micro gear from a EFlite micro plane and have a controlable glider that a friend could land!!

Thought about it!
