View Full Version : JST connectors?

I got some Rhino 2S batteries for my little scratchbuild, and they came with "male" JST connectors on them. Was that a mistake? Or is that the regular convention with JST connectors? I've never used them before. I got additional JST connectors to put on the ESC and wattmeter, but I don't want to go crazy with the soldering iron yet, if the batteries that I get in the future will all likely be the opposite gender.

All the batteries that I get have the "male" JST on them. My Super Decathlon BL came with the "female" end on the speed controler as did my CX2. So I guess this is the standard.

OK, that's the way I'll put them together then. Hope to finish it up on Monday. Thanks!

Do you use the E-Flite EC3 connectors otherwise on other batteries? If so I'd switch these smaller packs over as well and keep your other batteries and ESC's all EC3. The JST connectors are not a very efficient connector.

I use Deans on everything else. But on this build, I need to do everything I can do to save a few grams here and there. It's almost a micro-class plane. The motor only weighs 10 grams, the ESC is a dainty little 6-amp, and so on.

Sure I see, ever use the micro-deans or are those still to heavy?
BTW that is where I usually have seen the JST connectors on <10A applications. Any firther than that and I understand you are wasting energy and waiting for the time to come when you'll have an issue.
On the subject of connectors I used to love my Deans and now that I have been using EC3's never going back. Like them a lot and they seem to be holding up well. I was concerned of the wires pushing out of the sockets but no-prob yet.

if your referring to the litttle red connectors then yes, they are only good upto 10 amps...also the end that has the 2 little silver marks on the side (and slides into the other half) attaches to the lipo.

All of my batteries ( a few dozen from various companies) have a female JST.
The female/male designation is based on the metal parts not the plastic. The female has holes, the male has pins (know why they are named that way?::cheerful::).

I didn't consider the small Deans. Those are the ones with three prongs, right? I guess that if the JSTs give me trouble I could try those. It would be more hassle since the batteries come with JSTs preinstalled.
dbcisco - I bought some E-flite-branded JST connectors from Horizon ( >link (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLA243)< and >link (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLA242)< ), and the ones in the pack marked as female have the female red case with male pins inside. And the ones marked male are the reverse.

OK I got all these mini-components all soldered together....tedious as it was (skinny little 2mm bullet connectors and 20-gauge wire). Also made Deans-to-JST adaptors for my wattmeter so I can test different props.
I hooked it all up and plugged in the battery and it worked!...got the ESC-generated musical tune -- though a rather faint one from that itty-bitty motor (that's it next to the nickel for comparison)...and it responded to the transmitter throttle.

That is a little guy for sure.
If I recall properly you weren't sure you would be flying this scratch made model, if it's the one I am thinking of. So are you planning on flying her afterall or just getting her flight ready?

It's for my son, as kind of a next-step-up after his Aero Ace planes that he's tired of. I'll be test-flying it, then either buddy-boxing him on it, or just coaching him on the controls. A fella on RCG was nice enough to share his design publicly...link -> here (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=978415). Hope to finish it tomorrow.

Many companies haven't a clue about proper electric langauge standards. These companies label lots of things wrong. Eflite doesn't even use the standard BL motor terminology on some of their BL motors. I think they should hire a trained technical proof-reader instead of RC hobbyists and "ad men". I have offered the service for dirt cheap to many companies in the US and abroad. When I do get a response it is usually along the lines of "they make no mistakes". Usually the response is from mfg's in Asia with Chinglish manuals. It would be funny if it wasn't so stupid.
"Think how dangerous your house would be if the contractor installed male connectors on the walls because they were labeled wrong. Electrocuted children and pets!" Guess that is why we have a National Electric Code.

Tarantula Eight-in-One Charging Adapter http://www.redrockethobbies.com/Tarantula_Eight_in_One_Charging_Adapter_p/crc-tarantula1.htm
Thats one of 3 versions that commonsenserc offers... I have 3 of them (1 for each of my chargers)
