Watched a Stormchasers episode tonight where the team utilized a 12' WS High Wing plane to drop probes into an updraft which got sucked into a tornado.
They deployed the plane about 3 miles from the tornado then drove and Flew the R/C Plane from inside the truck to a better position. From an altitude of about 400' they dropped a camera probe and some instrument probes. At the end of the show they said they needed to retrive the probes which were sucked up to an altitude of 3500' and went with the tornado/storm for ~6 miles before being dropped to the ground.
THAT IS AWESOME stuff. I will try to dig up some links, pretty darn cool though. Was neat as heck to see a R/C plane being used as a storm chaser. The plane and it's predetermined use thereof was almost more interesting to watch than the twister!
Some links to come.
