So let me guess he floored it the same time he grabbed the shifter to shove it into drive. Was trying to be smart and burn away. As you can see in the video the brake lights went off before the reverse lights lit so he took his foot off the brake/floored it but it never made it passed reverse and it took off.

Then somehow the gas got jammed after the accident.

That is having a bad day, never would've guessed the vehicle would've crawled right up the cruiser like that either. Good thing it got hung up like that otherwise it would've been blasting off at xxmph in reverse YEE-HAA!

Wonder what happened to the civilian driver?

It was supposedly an old man driving. Most likely put it reverse by accident. Also, depending how old he was, that could be easy to do. The shift patterns of older cars were different.

Today:
P N R D 1 2

Way back when (as was in my 56 Chevy when I first got it):
P N D L R

You should try a column shift, it's a reverse H pattern (my first 56 was like this).
R 2
1 3

I still want to hear him explain "how it happened".. "Well, you see, I feed my Gremlin after midnight and then decided to tkae him with to my golf game, he must have put the car in reverse after I put it in drive"
